Let the nation testify to the words said;
Promises coming to pass, or, excuse. Be it more votes than love be the judge;
You voted, you spoke. Now!
He who Reigns, you voted
“Owamanyi akubisa negwolina-gwo”
- David Kigozi
Afriart Gallery opens a unique exhibition featuring Ugandan artist David Kigozi on April 8, on view until April 30. “Voices Heard” will feature nearly 20 new works, including several works that are themed after the recent election process in the country.
Kigozi (Kampala, 1975) paints memories of time brought back to life. In his earlier works he drew inspiration from childhood games, music, dance and domestic backyards. Although implicitly his work always depicts comments on society, in his latest series of work he is much more direct and outspoken.
The works in this thought-provoking exhibition are heavily inspired by recent elections in Uganda. In “Voices Heard” Kigozi moves away from seemingly innocent subjects such as children, farm animals and becomes much more unambiguous in his paintings and urge to stimulate debate and emotions through his art.
Using brush, pallet knife and bare fingers, Kigozi creates textures and sharp angular lines contrasted with rich colours to capture the feeling, energy and motion of a personal experience in time.
Opening reception: Friday 8 April from 6pm – 9pm
Entrance is free.
