Here Africa / Ici l'afrique assembles, for the first time in Switzerland, contemporary African art with more than 70 works by 24 artists from 17 African countries. The exhibition is hosted in the premises of the Château de Penthes, Geneva-Pregny, located in the area of United Nations and the international organizations. Originally from Maghreb and sub-Saharan Africa, some residing in Africa while others in the diasporas and coming from different generations, the participating artists and filmmakers are interesting for their great contribution to the aesthetic and cultural development of their continent, as well as for their involvement in key questions regarding African people. The catalogue of 146 pages includes 48 pages of colour pictures, an introduction by the curator, interviews with the artists Frédric Bruly Bouabré, Barthélémy Toguo and the Senegalese writer Boubacar Boris Diop, as well as a section on the artists of Maghreb curated by the editorial team of Ibraaz, London. Curated by Adelina von Fürstenberg The participating artists and filmmakers* are: Omar Ba (Senegal), Faouzi Bensaïdi* (Morocco), Filipe Branquinho (Mozambique), Frédéric Bruly Bouabré (Ivory Coast), Edson Chagas (Angola), Romuald Hazoumè (Benin), Pieter Hugo (South Africa), Adelita Husni-Bey (Libya), Nadia Kaabi-Linke (Tunisia), Gonçalo Mabunda (Mozambique), Mustafa Maluka (South Africa), Abu Bakarr Mansaray (Sierra Leone), J.D.'Okhai Ojeikere (Nigeria), Joshua Okoromodeke (Nigeria), Richard Onyango (Kenya), Idrissa Ouédraogo* (Burkina Faso), Chéri Samba (Congo), Sarkis & Guem & Perdrix (France-Benin), Zineb Sedira (Algeria), Yinka Shonibare MBE (UK/Nigeria), Malick Sidibé (Mali), Abderrahmane Sissako* (Mauritania), Pascale Marthine Tayou (Cameroon), and Barthélémy Toguo (Cameroon). Here Africa / Ici l'Afrique Contemporary Africa through the Eyes of its Artists A project by ART for The World 8 May–6 July 2014 Opening: 7 May, 6:30pm Château de Penthes 18, Ch. de l'Impératrice Geneva-Pregny Switzerland Adelina von Fürstenberg is an international curator and film producer, founder and the first Director of the Centre d'Art Contemporain in Geneva (Switzerland). During the 45th Venice Biennale, she was awarded by the International Jury for her direction of Le Magasin, Centre National d'Art Contemporain in Grenoble (France) and its School of Curators. In 1996, she founded the NGO ART for The World associated with the United Nations Department of Public Information, with the mission to foster art and education as universal values. In 2008, The Council of Europe awarded the NGO's first film production Stories on Human Rights with the label of an exceptional and innovative artistic project organized in Europe. Recently, Mrs Fürstenberg curated the 4th Biennale of Thessaloniki (Greece) and the traveling exhibition FOOD (2013–2015, exploring with artists and filmmakers questions of nutrition, agriculture, survival, health and economy, in partnership with the City of Geneva, the SESC Regional Direction of Sao Paulo (Brazil) and MuCEM in Marseille (France). www.hereafrica.netwww.artfortheworld.net
