‘Africa Out Loud!’ a fresh look at Music, Architecture & Art

The Prince Claus Fund and De Nieuwe Kerk announce their collaboration in the performance and presentation series Africa Out Loud! Music, Architecture & Arts from the Continent.

This new collaboration brings artists, architects, and musicians from the Prince Claus Fund’s extensive African network to De Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam.  Africa Out Loud! will accompany De Nieuwe Kerk’s major international exhibition on African art, Magical Africa – Masks and Sculptures from Ivory Coast. From 25 October through 15 February 2015, De Nieuwe Kerk’s winter exhibition features over 200 world-renowned African masks and sculptures. After decades of research, the original artists behind this impressive collection are made known. More info

13 November 2014 Architecture
Leading architect and Prince Claus Fund partner Joe Osae-Addo is head of the ground-breaking architecture network ArchiAfrika. ArchiAfrika promotes local design in places where Western ideas about architecture have dominated. In his upcoming lecture and panel discussion, Osae-Addo explores how Africa’s cities can be re-imagined through traditional African materials and ideas about architecture. More info

11 December 2014   Photography
South African documentary photographer Alexia Webster has travelled throughout Africa during her career, most recently focusing on themes of family heritage and ancestry. For her 2014 ‘Refugee Street Studio’ project, she has taken the portraits of over 700 refugees in self-made outdoor studios in one of the DRC’s Internally Displaced Persons camps. She explores the connecting power of a photograph in a context of dislocation. More info

22 January 2015 Modern Art
World-renowned modern artist and 2001 Prince Claus Laureate Ibrahim El-Salahi is one of the pioneers of the Sudanese and African modernist painting. The award-winning painter’s works are included in collections at the MoMA (New York) and the Smithsonian (Washington, DC), among others. He is widely exhibited, including a major retrospective at the Tate Modern in 2013. Acclaimed author and African Studies expert Salah M. Hassan will engage El-Salahi in a Q&A for Africa Out Loud! A selection of El-Salahi’s paintings will be featured at the Prince Claus Fund Gallery in January 2015. More info

5 February 2015 Music from the Sahel
Outstanding singers of Bintou Were, a Sahel Opera, Carlou D and Yves Thiam will perform a selection from the Sahel Opera, a major musical initiative of storytelling and folk music from the Sahel region, supported by the Prince Claus Fund. The opera sold-out theaters in Amsterdam, Paris and Bamako in 2007. For Africa Out Loud! internationally acclaimed Senegalese musician Wasis Diop, responsible for the musical production of the Sahel Opera, will participate in a Q&A after the performance. More info
