3 881 days – Group Show

Exactly 3 881 days since blank projects’ inaugural exhibition in 2005, their new project space Blank Lab launches with a group exhibition of works by Igshaan Adams, Jared Ginsburg, Turiya Magadlela and four guest artists: Catherine Anyango, Bronwyn Katz, Bonolo Kavula and Herman Mbamba.

Catherine Anyango (b.1982, Nairobi) studied at St Martins and the Royal College of Art followed by an MA in English Literature at UCL. Using film, sculpture and mise-en-scène devices to reconstruct physical environments that are disrupted by psychological, intangible phenomena, her current projects look at the emotional manifestations of crime and guilt upon public and private space. Anyango lives and works in London.

Bronwyn Katz (b.1993, Kimberley) obtained a BAFA from the Michaelis School of Fine Art in 2015. Tackling issues of identity and family heritage, she works across disciplines, in sculpture, installation, video and performance. Katz lives and works in Cape Town.

Bonolo Kavula (b. 1992, Bloemfontein) graduated in 2014 from the Michaelis School of Fine Art. She is concerned with the artistic process, enacting intricate, detailed, and repetitive mark-making onto pieces of cloth and animal hide, which she cuts up and reconstructs into large wall-based objects. Kavula lives and works in Cape Town.

Herman Mbamba (b.1980, Gibeon, Namibia) obtained his MFA from the National Academy of Fine Arts in Oslo, Norway in 2008. He uses intense colour in varying degrees of opacity and broad brushstrokes to create paintings which are imbued with the dynamism and emotional impact of abstract expressionism, though his works often sway between the abstract and the figurative. Mbamba lives and works in Norway.
