‘What Will We Tell Freedom?’ – a day of public art in Langa

The Africa Centre, in collaboration with the Institute of Creative Arts, presents ‘What Will We Tell Freedom?’, a day of public art curated by Khanyisile Mbongwa in Langa, on 9th August.

“…we attempt REIGN-MAKING premised on memory, lived experiences and educated hope in the quest to cultivate the art of living [not dying], to unlock a system of knowledge, representations, and practices that imagine, direct and act upon bodies, spaces and flows,” says Mbongwa.

This public art event will start at 12pm on Washington Street between Mendi Avenue and Jungle Walk and culminate at Guga S’thebe Arts and Cultural Centre at 3pm. The day includes the Portrait, an intriguing installation by the collective iQhiya that explores the roles of gender and tradition within contemporary South Africa and will be performed at the Langa Pass Museum. Other performances include: iLanga’libalele will use rhythm and rhyme to reimagine the present as well as the future; Vasiki Creative Citizens will place creativity at the service of society with their series of video installations; and Hi!Jack Collective will interweave fabric, performance, spoken word, moving pictures and still images to interrogate the rainbow nation ideology.
