Wallen Mapondera: Samusha Weiri Dongo
SMAC Gallery present Samusha Weiri Dongo, a solo presentation by Wallen Mapondera. The exhibition consists of a series of new sculptural collages, constructed from a variety of found materials, including discarded cardboard, plastic packaging, and cotton thread. This is the artist’s second solo exhibition with the gallery and his first in Johannesburg.
The exhibition will include new paintings in Muchawaya’s signature style, involving the application and erasure of multiple layers of vividly-coloured paint. Deeply rooted in his acknowledgement of community and family, the Zimbabwean artist’s practice embraces expressions of ‘Ubuntu’ – an ideology that encompasses compassion and the practice of kinship toward humanity, regardless of perceived differences. Ubuntu originates from Southern Africa, and is considered an integral part of society, both pre- and post-colonisation. Zviso Zvangu is an insight into Muchawaya’s visual impressions of people with whom he has engaged.
