On the occasion of the 130th anniversary of the Berlin Conference, the Black Slave Trade Memorial Foundation (Fondation du Mémorial de la Traite des Noirs) is hosting an afternoon of memory and discussion at Goethe-Institut Dakar.
This is an anniversary in danger of passing unnoticed. Today’s Africans – now “Senegalese,” “Gambian,” or “Congolese” – were assigned specified nationalities exactly 130 years ago. This was one of the most significant turning points in the history of globalization, and its ongoing effects remain subject to debate. Was the Berlin Conference a rupture or an element of continuity in the economic, political, and identity relations between the new African countries and their colonial rulers?
3–5 pm: SCREENING “Berlin 1885: The Division of Africa”
Documentary including fictionalized historical reenactments, directed by Joël Calmettes (France, 2010, 84 min, ARTE France)
5–7 pm PANEL DISCUSSION
