Iris Kensmil – Blues Before Sunrise

Iris Kensmil – Blues Before Sunrise
01 December 2019
Museum Kranenburgh presents Iris Kensmil – Blues Before Sunrise. The artist represented together with Remy Jungerman, the Netherlands Pavillion at the 58th Venice Biennale in 2019. The exhibition can be seen from 1 December until 13 April 2020.
Iris Kensmil (1970) lives and works in Amsterdam and has exhibited her paintings and drawings in recent years at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the Van Abbemuseum and Centraal Museum Utrecht. She introduces us to authors, philosophers, activists and musicians who are connected to the Black Empowerment movement. In this way she wants to paint a more complete picture of the past, indispensable for the imagination of a future.
Blues Before Sunrise accentuates the personal nature of Iris Kensmil’s work by showing the breadth of her themes, perspectives and working methods. The social component is essential to her work, but – as in Venice – the direct impression is one of a painterly representation of various stories and multiple identities.
