George Hallett: Consigned for Future Memory

Consigned for Future Memory is an exhibition of work by South African photographer George Hallett. Organised in two parts, the display will consist in a series of images depicting various moments in the life and work of George Hallett and additional printed material presented both at PR1 Gallery and at the Centre for Contemporary Art, University of Central Lancashire (UCLan), Preston. George Hallett (born 1942) lives and works in Cape Town. He began his career as a street photographer and freelanced for Drum magazine with editor Jacky Heyns from 1964. When, in 1966, the Apartheid government declared the mixed neighbourhood of District Six (in Cape Town) a White area, Hallett was encouraged by writer and artist Peter Clarke and protest poet James Matthews to document the area before the forced removals and destruction began. Hallett’s District Six photographs (1968-1970) announce the development of an interest in collective memory and the recording of the present for future generations. Consigned for Future Memory is organised by Making Histories Visible , the interdisciplinary research platform led by Professor Lubaina Himid MBE at UCLan’s Centre for Contemporary Art. The exhibition coincides with George Hallett’s presence in the UK as part of UCLan’s Distinguished Visitor Programme. Hallett will give a public lecture on Thursday 20 March 2014 about his photographic journey. He will also lead a workshop with UCLan’s photography and art students.
