Frieze Sounds 2015: Xaviera Simmons, Number 18

Xaviera Simmons works in performance, photography, video, sound and installation. Her durational performances often include live sonic and visual constructions informed by the avant-garde conceptual and compositional techniques of John Zorn and John Cage with additional references to postmodern choreography and the ephemera of archives. For Frieze, Simmons has crafted a newly scored audio work where language builds an in-between landscape; where multiple languages collapse into themselves in a movement that recalls a repetitive wave like gesture between and in-between the territory of the sailor and the siren. Xaviera Simmons (b. 1974, New York) lives and works in New York. Recent solo performances and exhibitions include The Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City and Light Work, Syracuse (2015); David Castillo Gallery, Miami; The Museum Of Modern Art, New York and The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Ridgefield CT (all 2013). Simmons is a recipient of the prestigious Foundation For Contemporary Art Grants For Artist Award in Visual Art (2015). Frieze Sounds is a program of sound works featuring three specially commissioned audio works by international artists. Frieze Sounds 2015 will be premiered in the VIP cars at Frieze New York. Sounds will also be accessible via a listening station inside the fair and streamed online. Frieze Sounds 2015 is programmed and curated by Cecilia Alemani and presented with BMW. http://friezeprojectsny.org
