Concrete Limbo

Concrete Limbo

Many West African cities are experiencing high rates of modernization. Luxury shopping malls and concrete apartment blocks are replacing older, more traditional neighborhoods. The metropolis’ changing identity and influx of new developments are leaving its urban spaces caught in a state of limbo: awaiting modern futures while fossilized with the fragments of the past. This is the case for Accra, Ghana. With this exhibition, the spatial art platform Limbo Accra amplifies their mission of increasing global awareness towards West Africa’s spatial environs and help establish a trans-continental dialogue of space and responsibility. Their curatorial strategy looks to move beyond the Western canon and into territories that have been overlooked, underrepresented, or downright ignored, by suggesting a playful inversion of spaces, putting forward a new ambitious model for re-envisioning a new metropolitan life through the production of site-responsive installations in ‘concrete skeletons’. Engaging with public institutions, designers, artists and space-makers, this exhibition recognises that there is no single or complete history of modern and contemporary art and will challenge viewers to observe how architecture and spatial design can lead to structural change and prosperity, as well as a better understanding of culture and tradition in West African cities. With: David Alabo, Diana Ejaita, Durimel, Elihu Ashong, Laila Hida, Nana Osei Kwadwao, Ofoe Amegavie, Owusu-Ankomah, Patrick Tagoe-Turkson, Serge Attukwei Clottey, Sierra Nallo, Sunst Studio X Free The Youth Curated by Benjamin Merten and Limbo Accra. www.thxagain.comwww.limboaccra.online
