Center of Unfinished Business

Le C& Center of Unfinished Business est une salle de lecture qui réunit une sélection extraordinaire, – parfois déroutante – d’ouvrages liés, de multiples façons, à la question du colonialisme. De la colonisation allemande à la mode congolaise, en passant par les marchés financiers du XXIᵉ siècle, la collection traverse divers domaines concernés.

Inaugurée en 2017, la salle de lecture a voyagé et tissé des liens de diverses manières avec des institutions de Cincinnati à Hong Kong, en passant par Berlin, Vienne, Toulouse, Athènes, Kassel et New York.

En initiant des rencontres et des conversations ouvertes autour des rapports de pouvoir coloniaux persistants – y compris les enjeux d’accessibilité et de conscience historique – le Centre encourage la remise en question critique et invite les institutions artistiques à interroger leurs propres points faibles. Il contient des ouvrages issus de la collection de C&, mais aussi de l’institution hôte, et cherche toujours à inclure une organisation locale de base.

Le projet n’a pas pour objectif de constituer une bibliothèque cohérente et exhaustive sur le colonialisme – car quand cela pourrait-il jamais être le cas ? Le colonialisme est une affaire inachevée : il persiste, sous diverses formes.

Mise en relation des institutions

Lancée en 2017, la salle de lecture a voyagé à travers le monde, s’installant dans des centres d’art et des musées, et collaborant avec des institutions telles que :

  • ifa (Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen), Berlin
  • Museum Ludwig, Cologne
  • Les Abattoirs – Musée, Toulouse
  • Para Site, Hong Kong
  • Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati
  • Vera List Center, New York
