Yina Jiménez Suriel y Raphael Fonseca son los directores artísticos de la Bienal Sequences de Islandia

Earlier this year, Sequences issued an open call that received more than seventy applications. After its consideration, the Sequences board selected the duo to develop the curatorial framework for the 2027 festival. According to Tinna Guðmundsdóttir, head of the board, both bring “a strong international vision and new ways of activating dialogue between art and society.”

Born in Rio de Janeiro and based in Denver, Raphael Fonseca serves as head of the Department of Modern and Contemporary Latin American Art at the Denver Museum. His practice addresses the intersections between art history, fiction, resilience, and education. He is also a member of the curatorial team for the 3rd Counterpublic Triennial (St. Louis, 2026), and recently held the role of chief curator of the 14th Mercosul Biennial (Porto Alegre, 2025).

From the Dominican Republic, Yina Jiménez Suriel’s work explores imagination, contemporary emancipatory processes, and the politics of movement. She is the curator of Current IV, a transdisciplinary curatorial program by TBA21–Academy, and the associate editor for Latin America and the Caribbean at Contemporary And (C&), in addition to developing exhibition projects in Europe and the Caribbean.

“We are delighted and honored to curate Sequences in 2027. We believe this is an exceptional opportunity for us to learn about the art scene in Iceland and across the Nordic region. We also hope that, in parallel, our experiences—predominantly working with artists from Latin America, the Caribbean, and the so-called Global South—can inform Iceland’s creative community. Collaboration is essential in both of our creative processes as curators, and we are eager to deepen it during the next two years in Reykjavík,” say Fonseca and Jiménez Suriel.

The theme, participating artists, and additional details for the thirteenth edition of the festival will be announced on a rolling basis over the next two years.

Sequences is an international festival organized by artists, held every two years in Reykjavík, Iceland. Focusing on contemporary art and time-based media, the festival creates a platform for experimental artistic creation and fosters connections between Icelandic and international artists. Sequences is organized by the Living Art Museum, Kling & Bang, and the Icelandic Art Center.
