LaToya Ruby Frazier: Performing Social Landscapes

LaToya Ruby Frazier’s photographs take as subject her hometown of Braddock, Pennsylvania, or rather the denizens of this working-class suburb of Pittsburgh, once the location of a large steelworks now closed.

For several years the artist has been documenting the lives of her relatives as witnesses of the economic crisis. Frazier is particularly interested in three generations of women, and her grandmother, her mother as well as self-portraits are the regular subjects of her photographs.

Going beyond documentary photography, LaToya Ruby Frazier executes complex compositions using a variety of framings and mises en abyme and including sometimes performative gestures.

Recipient in 2015 of the prestigious MacArthur fellowship, Frazier has exhibited mostly in the United States (MoMA, New York; New Museum, New York; the Whitney Museum, New York; or the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art). This exhibition in Bordeaux is the second step of her first presence in a French art institution.
