In House: boychild – Untitled Lip Sync (for Ana Mendieta)
As part of Wu Tsang’s artist residency In House, the artist has opened the studio and invited her frequent collaborator boychild to present a work in progress.
Untitled Lip Sync (for Ana Mendieta) is a 9-hour performance that continues boychild’s ongoing exploration of the relationship between language and movement engaging with the current Ana Mendieta exhibition at the Gropius Bau. The performance unfolds in five chapters, tracing the sun’s movement through the windows of the Gropius Bau building. Working in collaboration with Wu Tsang who has created a curtain backdrop, boychild engages with the window as a metaphor for translation and opacity.
The performance is a public activation of Wu Tsang’s 2018 artist residency, a new programme that returns artists and their creative processes to the Gropius Bau, expanding upon the institution’s history and original identity as a Museum of Decorative Arts with numerous studios and workshops.
The activation coincides with the exhibition Covered in Time and History: The Films of Ana Mendieta featuring 23 of Ana Mendieta’s multi-layered film works, which after several years of research have been restored and digitised. The connecting element across Ana Mendieta’s practice is the recurring use of the abstracted shape of the female form, often in dialogue with the natural world, in order to question the supposed separation between the body and nature.
During the performance Untitled Lip Sync (for Ana Mendieta) admission to the exhibition Covered in Time and History: The Films of Ana Mendieta will be free of charge on 6.6.2018.
