Gabrielle Goliath: This Song Is For…

Gabrielle Goliath: This Song Is For…
Gabrielle Goliath, South African multimedia artist and 2019’s Standard Bank Young Artist Award Winner for Visual Art, showcases her new work, This song is for… at the Standard Bank Gallery this winter. Deeply concerned with questions of violence and the precarity of black, brown, feminine and queer bodies, Goliath’s work has been exhibited across South Africa, and internationally.
Goliath places her practice within the contexts of unreconciled traumas and socially entrenched structures of patriarchal power and rape-culture and for this powerful audio and visual installation she has collaborated with local musicians and rape victims to reflect on the memories and traumas that carry significance for survivors. As collaborators on the project, the survivors share songs that relate to their traumatic memories, rearranged by local musicians including Nonku Phiri, Desire Marea, Msaki, Gabi Motuba and Jacobi de Villiers, as well as written reflections and significant colours that are displayed on screen.
The exhibition also includes a programme of live performances.
