CURATOR’S PERSPECTIVE: NAOMI BECKWITH

As part of ICI’s Curator’s Perspective—an itinerant public discussion series featuring national and international curators—Naomi Beckwith (Marilyn and Larry Fields Curator, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago) will present on her current research interests and curatorial practice.
The core of Beckwith’s research, writings and exhibition-making has been concerned with the language and forms surrounding blackness in modern and contemporary art. For her Curator’s Perspective talk, Beckwith will focus on her curatorial strategies in exhibiting conceptual work by artists of color in order to engender the most expansive critical conversation around their work. In particular, Beckwith will also focus on her upcoming exhibition, The Freedom Principle—co-curated with Dieter Roelstraete—which presents the creative flourishing in art and music on Chicago’s South Side in the mid-1960s. Beckwith posits the question: “How does one deal with black cultural nationalism now?”
Naomi Beckwith is the Marilyn and Larry Fields Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. Prior to joining the MCA, Beckwith was a fellow at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia and, most immediately, Associate Curator at The Studio Museum in Harlem. Beckwith has curated and co-curated several exhibitions internationally and nationally and has contributed to numerous catalogues and journals. She holds an MA with Distinction from the Courtauld Institute of Art in London and was a Critical Studies Fellow at the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program.
