Santu Mofokeng

Santu Mofokeng (1956–2020) was a renowned South African photographer known for his powerful and nuanced documentation of Black life under apartheid and beyond. Initially working as a street and news photographer, he later joined the Afrapix collective and became a key figure in socially engaged photography. His work explored themes of spirituality, land, memory, and identity, often challenging stereotypical representations of South African communities. Mofokeng’s images are held in major international collections, and he represented South Africa at the Venice Biennale in 2013.
