Born in 1947 in Gorée (Senegal), the famous painterSouleymane Keïta was known as one of the major figures of L’École de Dakar. Founded by Ibou N’Diaye, Papa Ibra Tall and Pierre Lods, l’École de Dakar was an artistic movement and genre that combined painting, sculpture and crafts into the Négritude, an attempt to assert a distinctively African voice in the arts and culture.
After his studies at the National School of Fine Arts of Dakar under the supervision of the painter, Iba Ndiaye (1928-2008), Keïta became in his turn a professor of ceramic and painting at the Jamaïca Arts Center in New York. The Senegalese painter was also a board member of Gorée Institute and the Scientific Council of the Biennial event of Dakar. His works have been exhibited in various institutions worldwide.
Souleymane Keïta passed away on July, the 19th 2014 due to a short disease.
