1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair returns to La Mamouniain Marrakech between the 23 – 24 February 2019.

Bringing together 18 international galleries and the works of over 65 established and emerging artists, 1-54 Marrakech aims to broaden its programme with bespoke events and exhibitions across the city and showcase Marrakech’s creative energy.

Following an inaugural Marrakech edition this past February, the fair will include seven galleries from Africa: Galerie Cécile Fakhoury (Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire / Dakar, Senegal), Goodman Gallery (Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa), L’Atelier 21 (Casablanca, Morocco), Loft Art Gallery (Casablanca), LouiSimone Guirandou Gallery (Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire), Retro Africa (Abuja, Nigeria), and Siniya28 (Marrakech).

First-time exhibitors include Galerie Poggi (Paris), Goodman Gallery (Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa), In Situ – fabienne leclerc (Paris), and Siniya28 (Marrakech).

The fair will be complemented by 1-54 Forum, the fair’s extensive talks programme, to be held at La Mamounia in parallel to the fair. For the 2019 Marrakech edition, 1-54 FORUM will be curated for the first time by art historian and curator Karima Boudou and will take the life and work of African American Surrealist, painter, jazz musician and poet Ted Joans (1928-2003) as its point of departure.

Once again the fair will be accompanied by a wider programme of events in partnership with local institutions across the city, including Museum of African Contemporary Art Al Maaden (MACAAL), Musée Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech, Montresso Art Foundation*, Comptoir des Mines Galerie, LE 18 and Fondation Farid Belkahia among others.
