Contemporary And (C&) is excited to announce the appointment of Ethel-Ruth Tawe as the new Editor-in-Chief of C& Magazine. With a visionary and anti-disciplinary practice spanning text, image, and time-based media, Tawe brings a powerful synthesis of critical thought, editorial sensibility, and multidimensional perspectives to one of C&’s core platforms.
“I’m delighted to be joining a space that has been critically engaged in artistic discourse, questioning language hierarchies, and fostering experimentation, especially at this particular rupture in time,” says Tawe. “As an artist myself, I’m thinking about writing as an art form, a collage of words, synthesis of ideas and imagining otherwise. I am thinking about collective care as a methodology in stewarding this new chapter, alongside a stellar team and the inspiring artists, writers, and contributors we engage.”
With an academic background in development studies and international human rights, Tawe combines rigorous research with editorial clarity and curatorial insight. She previously served as Editorial Director of the arts and culture platform Africa 2.O Magazine, and has contributed to publications including Contemporary And, British Journal of Photography, and BOMB Magazine. Her editorial work often centers questions of memory, language, and visual culture, offering incisive perspectives that challenge dominant narratives.
Beyond her publishing experience, Tawe brings a strong record in creative strategy, consulting on global campaigns for organizations such as ART X Lagos, the Global Alliance for Green and Gender Action, and Nike. Her work in visual research has contributed to projects presented at Tribeca Film Festival, BlackStar Fest, and The Barbican Centre.
“We are thrilled to welcome Ethel-Ruth Tawe as the new Editor-in-Chief of C& Magazine,” says Yvette Mutumba, Executive Director of C&. “Her vision and expertise will further strengthen our commitment to amplifying creative voices of the Global Majority and fostering critical discourse in contemporary art. As C& continues to evolve across languages, platforms, and formats, we remain dedicated to providing a space for meaningful exchange and collaboration within our global network.”
Tawe joins C& at a pivotal moment. With her multidimensional experience, deep artistic integrity, and global sensibility, she will lead the magazine into an exciting new phase—one that continues to challenge dominant narratives and reimagine contemporary art as a site of expansive and radical possibilities.
