‘Black Cargo’ is Serge Nitegekas’s first solo exhibition occupying the main spaces of the Cape Town gallery, and follows his debut Johannesburg solo, Black Lines, in March 2012.

Nitegeka (born in Burundi in 1983) – who works in sculpture, painting and installation – writes that ‘Black Cargo’ picks up where Black Lines left off, with ‘lines taking on forms, creating imaginary spaces that define and shape narratives of forced migration’. Black Cargo will explore the idea of the ‘body as cargo’ in relation to the ‘black subject’. For the exhibition, the artist created a complex installation of intersecting black planks which serve to challenge a viewer who wishes to enter and experience the space. This will be accompanied by his paintings, mostly on panels taken from art crates, on which he creates abstract planes inspired by his installations and free-standing sculptures. Also included will be Nitegeka’s first film, BLACK SUBJECTS, in which a group of performers move through his studio environment, ‘performing’ his sculptures, their interactions ‘based on the improvised negotiations of survival’.
