KERRY JAMES MARSHALL’s Painting and Other Stuff – the biggest exhibition of work by Marshall in Europe to date , will be touring to three major venues. Painting and Other Stuff will open up his multifaceted approach to making art, and offer us a glimpse into his inner world of ideas and ambitions.

Acting as a panorama of Marshall’s practice, the scope of this project will also be complimented by an equally kaleidoscopic survey of important references and source material that have influenced Marshall through his career. The artist’s interest in these references, artefacts and genres is evidently not just a matter of forms and formalism or even narrative. For Marshall, the breadth of visual media used also has a speculative dimension – they become sites to ask some of art’s most profound, enduring questions.

Painting and Other Stuff is comprised of a number of informal groupings organised around various themes and motivations that Marshall has considered over his career. They focus on such ideas as ‘addressing art history,’ ‘beauty,’ ‘the image bank,’ ‘commemoration’ and ‘the everyday.’ Many new works are also presented, and numerous series works are also exhibited together for the first time. Along with the addition of formative collages, photographs and paintings, Painting and Other Stuff will open up Marshall’s multifaceted approach to making art, offering us a glimpse into his inner world of ideas and ambitions.

Kerry James Marshall: Painting and Other Stuff is co-organised by M HKA in Antwerp, Kunsthal Charlottenborg in Copenhagen, Fundació Antoni Tàpies in Barcelona and Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid.

The catalogue Kerry James Marshall: Paintings and Other Stuff will be published in mid-November, and will include contributions from Okwui Enwezor, Nav Haq, Kerry James Marshall and Dieter Roelstraete. Co-published by Ludion, M HKA, Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Fundació Antoni Tàpies and Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia.
