Hauser & Wirth Institute provides generous research grants for predoctoral and senior scholars. These archives-based fellowships promote meaningful, field-enriching research by established art historians and curators, and foster a new generation of scholars. All applicants with a strong art history background are encouraged to apply.

Application Guidelines

Deadline: March 9, 2020 12:00 AM EST.  Recipients will be notified in early April 2020.

Applications must be submitted via Slideroom, at hauserwirthinstitute.slideroom.com.  A Slideroom application fee of 5 USD applies.

 

Senior Scholar Fellowships

The Senior Scholar Fellowship Program:

  • Funds archives-based research undertaken during a one-year period
  • Awards a stipend of $50,000 to each recipient
  • Supports rigorous scholarship that engages deeply with the archives of modern and contemporary artists, critics and/or curators and related archives

Selected recipients will be required to present their work publicly at an event in 2021.

Application Process

Eligibility: Candidates must be conducting research on a subject in the field of modern or contemporary art. Applicants will have a terminal degree in their field, or have a significant history of publication and/or curatorial projects. Candidates are responsible for gaining permission to work with the archive(s) on which their research centers. The program is open to researchers in art history and corresponding fields, regardless of citizenship.

To apply, qualified applicants must submit the following:

  • Letter stating research interest and intent (not to exceed 500 words)
  • Bibliography of archival collections that will support your research
  • Writing sample not to exceed 20 pages (ca. 5,000 words)
  • One reference letter
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Letter of support from sponsor archive or research institution that holds the bulk of archival materials you will be consulting

 

Predoctoral Fellowships

The Predoctoral Fellowship Program:

  • Funds two consecutive months of archival research
  • Awards predoctoral fellows a stipend of $10,000 each
  • Supports rigorous research that engages deeply with the archives of modern and contemporary artists, critics and/or curators and related archives

Selected recipients will be asked to present their work publicly at an event in 2021.

Application Process

Eligibility: Candidates must be conducting research on a subject in the field of modern or contemporary art. Applicants must be enrolled in a master’s program, or PhD program in the pre-dissertation stage. Candidates are responsible for gaining permission to work with the archive(s) on which their research centers. The program is open to students of art history and corresponding fields, regardless of citizenship.

  • Bibliography of archival collections that will support your research

Review Process  

Senior Scholar and Predoctoral applications will be reviewed by the Institute’s Fellowship Committee, which will consider:

  • The feasibility of the research project and its depth of engagement with archival materials
  • The applicant’s proven capacity to produce significant research
  • The applicant’s demonstrated ability to convey significant concepts in clear, intelligible prose
