CIMAM 2014 Annual Conference: "Museums in Progress: Public interest, private resources?"

CIMAM’s Annual Conference is currently the most important forum for communication, co-operation and information exchange between museums, professionals, visual arts workers and artists within modern and contemporary art practice. Its guiding principle is the presentation of new unpublished work followed by free discussion and visits to the foremost contemporary art institutions, collections and projects in the region. Around 200 delegates are expected to attend CIMAM 2014 Annual Conference in Doha. Three keynote speakers and ten case study presentations form the basis of a larger debate that will take place among the conference delegates. The active implication of members and delegates will be requested through extended Q&A, panel discussions and visits to contemporary art institutions in the city to reflect upon the issues arising from the conference topics.

Confirmed speakers include Graham W.J. Beal, Director, Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit; Bernard Blistène, Director, Musée National d’Art Moderne, Paris; Iftikhar Dadi, Associate professor, Department of History of Art, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY; Kate Fowle, Chief Curator at Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, Moscow and Director-at-large at Independent Curators International (ICI), New York; Abdellah Karroum, Director, Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, Doha; Maria Lind, curator and writer, currently the Director of Tensta Konsthall, Stockholm; Eugenio López, Founder, Fundación Jumex Arte Contemporáneo, Mexico City; Gabi Ngcobo, curator and faculty, Wits School of the Arts, University of Witswatersrand; Hito Steyerl, artist, filmmaker, and essayist, Berlin; and Olav Velthuis, Associate Professor at the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, University of Amsterdam.

Visits in Doha include Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, Museum of Islamic Art, QMA Katara Gallery and visits to private collections.

CIMAM 2014 Annual Conference is organized by CIMAM and hosted and co-organized by Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art. Mathaf is a Qatar Museums organization led by Chairperson H.E. Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al Thani and supported by Qatar Foundation, led by Chairperson H.H Sheikha Moza bint Nasser. Mathaf is founded by the Vice Chairperson of Qatar Museums, H.E Sheikh Hassan bin Mohammed bin Ali Al Thani.

Post-conference tour to Sharjah, Dubai & Abu Dhabi is hosted by Sharjah Art Foundation, Dubai Culture & Arts Authority, Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority and Salama bint Hamdan Al Nahyan Foundation. Visits will include the Gulf Studies Center, Maraya Art Center, Barjeel Foundation, the Museum of Archeology, Sharjah Art Foundation and the Heritage area in Sharjah, a selection of galleries in Dubai, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and Manarat Al Saadiyat museum projects in Abu Dhabi.
