The 6th Cairo Video Festival

The 6th Cairo Video Festival

The Cairo Video Festival is a project Medrar started in 2005. Five editions have taken place since, bringing artists from different countries to exhibit their video art and experimental film works in Egypt. The festival is dedicated to the power of creative minds. Finding the balance in its film selection between rich concepts and masterful techniques. Those films are shown to a wide audience in Egypt, introducing them to different ideas from all around the world. The 6th Cairo Video Festival is inspired by the “generator,” which has become a staple in the life of Egyptians, due to the frequent power outages over the past two years. A generator offers an alternative to keep life in motion. Through the festival the initiators are hoping to create alternative channels, which can assimilate the creative energy bursting in the region despite the difficult production conditions. Medrar received about 1000 films from different countries, from which the festival’s jury selected 201. The festival is hosting a number of film production and distribution organization, to exchange experiences regarding terms of production and screenings, discover new talents and give them a chance to become part of the International art scene, and promote international cultural exchange. Moreover, the festival is organizing methodic workshops to determine the most adequate form of training programs, as a step toward launching -“Medrar’s Video and Experimental Film School.”- The aim behind all of these activities remains the same, which is development in culture through sharing and learning. In order for that expansion to take place, Medrar, this year, has decided to screen in different venues for broader audience, varying from the audience of independent cinema, visual arts and the wider cultural interest. The festival continues until November 20th at Medrar for Contemporary Art, Cinema Zawya, and Gezira Art Center.
