The Academy of the Arts of the World welcomes the Invisible Borders Trans-African Photographers Organization to a discussion centering on the group’s Road Trip Project. For this year’s edition, nine artists from different countries in Africa have embarked on a journey from Lagos, Nigeria, to Sarajevo, Bosnia, traveling through 21 countries in Africa and Europe in 151 days.

Along the way, the artists develop photographic, video, and text works that address border regimes on the African and European continents, while at the same time reflecting on the interactions with local artists, cultural producers, and residents that the trip enables. As a platform, Invisible Borders seeks to promote long-term, trans-African relationships of an artistic nature, overcoming borders between disciplines while supporting young African artists and contributing to a discourse on how sociopolitical themes can be addressed by means of artistic intervention. In doing so, the initiative works towards shaping new perceptions of Africa today. Invisible Borders is winner of the Prince Claus Award 2014.

Nine participating artists stop by King Georg in Cologne on their trip: Angus McKinnon, Breeze Yoko, Dawit L. Petros, Emeka Okereke, Emmanuel Iduma, Heba Y. Amin, Lindokhule Nkosi, Renee Mboya, and Tom Saater. Bonaventure Ndikung, founder and artistic director of SAVVY Contemporary, Berlin, is present to moderate the discussion.
