ONE SUBJECT, TWO MINUTES, NO CUTS

ONE SUBJECT, TWO MINUTES, NO CUTS These are the rules for films being made as part of the project Labour in a Single Shot by internationally renowned filmmaker Harun Farocki and curator, author and artist Antje Ehmann
“Labor representation, as seen through an experimental lens” (The Egypt Independent)
Antje Ehmann and Harun Farocki have been conducting workshops for young filmmakers in 14 cities worldwide. During the last week, they were working with film students at Wits University in Johannesburg. In the workshops, a series of short single-shot films are produced that explore the themes of work and labour. Labour in a Single Shot further aims to deal with and respond to the specifics of each city and region where the work takes place. In each city we see all kinds of labour every day. Shoe repairers, waiters and cooks, window cleaners, tattoo-artists or garbage workers. But most of the work activities happen behind closed doors. Often labour is not only invisible but also unimaginable. Therefore it is vital to indulge into research, to open one’s eyes and to set oneself into motion: where do we see which kind of labour? What happens in the centre of a city, what occurs at the periphery? What is hidden? What is characteristic and what is unusual with regard to the city in question? What kind of labour process could be an interesting cinematographic challenge?
The results of the Johannesburg film workshop will be presented in public screenings at the Bioscope Cinema on 13.04.2014 at 17H00. As a prelude to this premiere, the Bioscope Cinema will be showing a selection of short films from the Labour in a Single Shot project from other world cities, as well as In Comparison, a film by Harun Farocki from 2009, on 12 April 2014 at 19H00.
