Association for Visual Art is seeking a new director. AVA, in partnership with Spier, is an independent non-profit community-based organisation and gallery located in Cape Town’s CBD.
The Association for Visual Art (AVA) Gallery showcases contemporary South African art in all media and is committed to the promotion and advancement of the visual arts, artists, curators and cultural capital in South Africa.
The AVA achieves these goals through hosting, nurturing and enabling, established, emerging, formally trained and self-taught artists through exhibition exposure. The AVA Gallery’s exhibition schedule hosts exhibitions which change every six weeks.

The function of the Gallery Director is to oversee gallery operations, and exhibitions planning by working with board members, staff, interns and volunteers to continue the annual exhibition schedule. The Gallery Director reports to the board.
? Ensuring the smooth day-to-day running of the gallery
? Fundraising to ensure the financial stability of the organisation
? Ensuring that the gallery remains artistically ambitious and financially robust
? Work with exhibitions committee to set exhibition themes, titles and descriptions
? Maintaining the ongoing promotion and advertising of the gallery
? Work with Community Outreach (ArtReach) Director
? Ensure policies, procedures, exhibitions tasks such as art handling, installation methods, and artist correspondence are duly performed
? Liaising with exhibiting artists and negotiating sales
? Promoting and selling artists’ work through both exhibitions and personal contacts
? Keeping up to date with both local and international industry developments and market trends
? General administration, budgeting, finances and accounts
The ideal candidate will have:
? An undergraduate degree in fine art, art history or equivalent
? Experience curating and installing gallery shows
? A demonstrable understanding and appreciation of South African visual art.
? Excellent interpersonal skills
? Previous and demonstrable experience in strategic and business planning, income generation and fundraising
? Knowledge of local and international arts scene
? Experience in the day-to-day financial running of a organization or company
? Strong written and oral communication skills
? Strong computer literacy. Proficient use of the Microsoft Office suite, Adobe Photoshop and Graphic Mail and a willingness to adapt to new office technology will be a recommendation.
? Ability to work well individually and as part of a group
? Excellent time management and organizational skills
