GALLERIES

Gavin Brown’s enterprise, Goodman Gallery, Marian Goodman Gallery, Hauser & Wirth, Jack Shainman Gallery, Sprüth Magers, Stevenson and many more.

FEATURE

Projects from established and historical artists are precisely curated by gallerists in the Feature sector. Projects may include solo presentations, juxtapositions, and thematic exhibits from artists representing a wide range of cultures, generations, and artistic approaches. Solo shows dedicated to female artists are exceptionally strong this year, like established artists such as Rachel Whiteread (b. 1963, UK) at Galleria Lorcan O’Neill, featuring five iconic ‘Bookshelf’ sculptures, and last year’s Turner Prize winner Lubaina Himid MBE (b. 1954 Zanzibar), who will have new and recent works on show at Hollybush Gardens .

STATEMENTS

Statements presents exciting new solo projects by emerging artists, who are eligible to receive the prestigious Baloise Art Prize. The Baloise Group acquires artworks by the award-winning artists, which it then donates to important European art institutions. This year’s edition features a strong range of works exploring the role of the human body and how its perceived. Doreen Garner’s 8ft stainless steel meat rack featuring silicon carcasses cast from body parts of black women at JTT (United States) making visible the historic torture of slaves and female mutilations in the 18th and 19th century.

UNLIMITED

Art Basel has announced 71 projects for Basel 2018’s Unlimited sector, curated again by Gianni Jetzer, curator-at-large for the Hirschhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. Presenting a wide range of works that go beyond the context of the stand, Unlimited is Basel’s platform for large-scale installations and sculptures, projected video works, live performances, and anything else that can’t be contained in the art fair booth. For 2018, the projects span the breadth of these media and formats, with new video works, performance works both new and old, and large-scale installations. Among the many artists will be works by Yto Barrada (Pace Gallery), Frank Bowling (Alexander Gray Associates), Candice Breitz (Goodman Gallery, kaufmann repetto, KOW), Sam Gilliam (David Kordansky Gallery), Rashid Johnson (Hauser & Wirth), Ibrahim Mahama (White Cube), Mikhael Subotzky (Goodman Gallery), Martine Syms (Sadie Coles HQ) and Barthélémy Toguo (Galerie Lelong & Co.).

FILM
Art Basel’s week-long program of films by and about artists is curated by Maxa Zoller. Known for her roaming series of experimental film screenings, Zoller plans a diverse and challenging program of works that reflects on the complex role of media in today’s global world featuring works by Candice Breitz (Goodman Gallery, kaufmann repetto, KOW) Kudzanai Chiurai (Goodman Gallery) and William Kentridge (Goodman Gallery, Marian Goodman Gallery).

SPECIAL PROJECT
Art Basel has commissioned ‘Basilea’, a Creative Time project for this year’s Messeplatz project in Basel. Lara Almarcegui, Isabel Lewis and Recetas Urbanas will collaborate on a public project curated by Elvira Dyangani Ose, Senior Curator at Creative Time, that will be transforming the Messeplatz through a series of immersive projects. Basilea invites us to reflect on a city’s possibilities through a series of immersive projects connecting the City of Basel, its residents and the 95,000+ fairgoers anticipated to attend Art Basel. ‘Basilea’ marks Creative Time’s first international public commission and the first collaboration between these artists.
