The Black Image Corporation – Theaster Gates

In the 1940s and 50s Johnson Publishing helped define the aesthetics and cultural languages of Black America with publications such as Ebony and Jet. Using their archives, Theaster Gates has conceived The Black Image Corporation, at Berlin's Martin Gropius Bau, in collaboration with Fondazione Prada. Central to the exhibition are the works of photographers Moneta Sleet Jr. and Isaac Sutton who created editorial images for the publishing house. The Black Image Corporation is on show from 25 April through to 28 July 2019 - here's a brief installation view.
