Collective Practices: A Sonic Essay

By Kabelo Malatsie

Listening to oneself listening. Listening to emotions, and frictions of emotions. And then one has to decide what those frictions of
emotions are. What is the tension they are generating, the rub between them. And then one has to name them-naming the parameters of emotions because you want to get the modulations of emotion. Listening to the act of your own listening, but also how this bounces back from the other, most of the times that’s what it is all about.

His work exists at the juncture of two streams of practice; his curatorial concepts and art which are presented through embodied critique as learning-and-unlearning, interwoven by sound, music and image-making. His most notable project PUNGWE is an interdisciplinary project circling sound in Africa with related contemporary arts discourses and spaces. Pungwe has produced collaborative works ‘Pungwe Nights’, ‘Listening at Pungwe’, and ‘Sugar free///Pungwe. Robert Machiri is a 2021 fellow of the DAAD Artist-in-Berlin-fellow.
