Congo Biennale 2021: The Breath Of The Ancestors

For this second edition, Congo Biennale honours the links between Africa, its diasporas and its Afro-descendants. The call for applications is open from 03 December 2020 to 28 February 2021. The application is open to African and international artists.

These artists must send a complete application file with:

1. A letter of motivation;
2. The completed application form;
3. A biography of maximum 30 lines in English, French, Portuguese, or Spanish;
4. A detailed curriculum vitae; with your name, email, telephone number, address, etc.
5. A recent high-resolution portrait photo;
6. scanned copy of the passport valid until at least 31 March. 2022 ;
7. A brief text on your work or project, related to the theme of this second edition.
8. An artist’s portfolio
9. Articles or critical texts by curators, journalists or art critics;
10. Five images of your work to be presented to the selection committee (max 300 dpi, per image in JPG format).
11. Two to three videos of 1 to 5 minutes for artists working on images movement or other forms of contemporary expression, such as the performance or installation…
12. A text of presentation of the works and their technical data sheet (references of the works, titles, dimensions, weight, volumes, year of creation, materials, value of the works and insurance value, addresses of the places of origin and of delivery of the works.

All application documents must be submitted in French, English, Portuguese, or Spanish.

The results will be published on: 10 March 2021.

The Congo Biennale chooses Armelle Dakouo and Fahamu Pecou, independent curators, to curate the second edition. It will take place over 45 days, from september 10 to october 24, 2021, in public spaces and other venues in the city of Kinshasa. More than 40 artists, designers, architects, art historians, curators, art critics from the 5 continents have been in-vited to propose a project that will be realised and presented as part of this international event in the cosmopolitan city of Kinshasa. The title of this first edition is The breath of the ancestors (Le Souffle des Ancêtres). For this year 2021, the biennial will impose itself as an unmissable event on the Congolese artistic scene with a great international impact.

This year’s Biennale engages artists, designers, architects, and participants working on public space to rethink social, common and shared space. The Biennale wishes to create a place for creation and innovation in public spaces. It will support socially engaged artistic practices in a local and international context with innovative artistic projects. In doing so, artists can work with the local community to produce and contribute to Kinshasa’s social development.
