THE INTOXICATION OF BEING - A PUBLIC LECTURE BY KENDELL GEERS

THE INTOXICATION OF BEING - A PUBLIC LECTURE BY KENDELL GEERS
For the first time in a decade Kendell Geers will return to South Africa to give a lecture as part of his world tour. Drawing upon his experiences as an anti-apartheid activist, Geers will speak about his disillusionment with politics and how questions about the nature of spirit have influenced him and his work. The talk is an biographical journey that begins with the influence of Southern African rock art and moves through Ndebele murals to the post-modern present. In part performance, in part art historical, in part biographical, punctuated with humour and anecdotes, Kendell Geers talking is not something to be missed. Kendell Geers rose to critical acclaim in the 1990s as a voice of a generation of post-apartheid artists. Once dubbed the "Enfant Terrible" of South Aftrican art, Geers has since risen to global maturity with a unique voice that is as much South African as it is international. His art and writings have given rise to urban legend and infamy alike and yet his historical role cannot be denied. In the 1990s, he curated the Gencor and BHP Billiton collection of art, wrote a weekly column for The Star as well as Vrye Weekblad newspapers, performed with iconic Afrikaans punk band Koos and blazed a trail that generations of artists are still following. He organised exhibitions of Marina Abramovi? and Yinka Shinibare, as well as presented work by Philippe Parreno, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Janine Antoni and Ilya Kabakov in Johannesburg.
