The Creative Time Summit: "The Curriculum"

At the invitation of Okwui Enwezor, artistic director of the 56th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia All the World's Futures, the 2015 Creative Time Summit—the world's largest international conference on art and social change—will participate in this year's exhibition. The 2015 Summit, titled "The Curriculum," will take place in the Arsenale from August 11 through 13. Developed and directed by Creative Time Chief Curator Nato Thompson, it will address what it means to produce, transform, and disseminate knowledge across the conflicted terrain of the world today. Distinguished participants include president of Afghanistan Ashraf Ghani, Mariam Ghani, Teju Cole, Charles Gaines, Amy Goodman, Sofía Hernández Chong Cuy, Emily Jacir, Achille Mbembe, Antonio Negri, Cesare Pietroiusti, Akram Zaatari, and many others. The Creative Time Summit: "The Curriculum" will bring together nearly 60 speakers, including artists, activists, educators, theorists, and policymakers from more than 20 countries. The Summit will ask such questions as "How is knowledge formed within one person and transmitted through time, space, and social relationships? What practices and manifestations of knowledge are privileged, and what forces shape those values?" Specific topics to be considered range from artist-initiated educational institutions to the potential of curriculum for community-wide learning, the future of education in Afghanistan, and de-colonized pedagogy. Thompson says, "The lens of 'the curriculum' not only provides a space to consider how knowledge is produced both within the traditional educational structure and outside of it, but—perhaps most importantly for the Summit—it also places art into a framework of open-ended knowing, which grounds it in its profound political capacity." The 2015 Summit will address its subject in a variety of ways. The first two days will include a series of dynamic topical presentations, keynote addresses, and a variety of brief discussions, films and statements, while the third day will bring the audience into the conversation with a wide range of debates, panels and breakout discussions concerning specific case studies and political issues. Participants and special guests include Kunlé Adeyemi, Marwa Arsanios, Defne Ayas, Marco Baravalle, Karl Beveridge, Adrian Blackwell, Deanna Bowen, Beatrice Catanzaro, Cisneros, Teju Cole, Carole Condé, Vuk ?osi?, Mujeres Creando, Sofía Hernández Chong Cuy, Chto Delat, Democracia, Sandino Bucio Dovalí, Charles Gaines, Michael Gerace, Ashraf Ghani, Mariam Ghani, Hope Ginsburg, Amy Goodman, Fran Ilich, Emily Jacir, Shannon Jackson, Athi Mongezeleli Joja, Paul Ramírez Jonas, Justin Langlois, Pedro Lasch, Simone Leigh, Duane Linklater, Rick Lowe, Sarat Maharaj, Magdalena Malm, Achille Mbembe, Naeem Mohaiemen, Nástio Mosquito, Nadia Myre, Antonio Negri, Ahmet Ögüt, Zeyno Pekünlü, Alessandra Pomarico, Farid Rakun, Jen Delos Reyes, Pedro Reyes, Jolene Rickard, Sharifa Rhodes-Pitts, Paolo Rosso, Eleanor Saitta, Arts Schoolaboratory, Marinella Senatore, Mina Setra, Tina Sherwell, Gregory Sholette, Ande Somby, Public Studio, Hakan Topal, Nomeda & Gediminas Urbonas, Joshua Wong, Akram Zaatari.
