Closes: 2 August 2026
El Museo del Barrio in New York presents Sophie Rivera: Double Exposures, an exhibition dedicated to the American photographer of Puerto Rican descent Sophie Rivera (1938 - 2021). Organized by interim chief curator Susanna V. Temkin with support from Carlos Ortiz and Serda Yalkin, the occasion celebrates the artist’s contributions to photography and Nuyorican visual culture, as well as her historic connection to El Museo, where she held her first solo show in the 1980s.
Double Exposures references both the photographic technique of layering multiple images and Rivera’s exploration of multiplicity and identity featuring portraits, documentary images, experimental self-portraits, photographs of New York’s subway, and vintage prints never seen before from the artist’s archive.
