Re-writing activist histories: Women at war in Algeria

On Thursday at 7pm (May 1) there will be a screening of the rare film Algeria: Women at War at Cinema6, Peckham.
This documentary is about the key role Algerian women played in Algeria’s liberation struggle from the French during the years 1954-1962, and their equally important place in society after independence. Veteran fighters Aicha Bouazzar, Baya Hocine and Fatima Hakem talk, some of them for the first time, about their role in the revolution. Their daughters Houria Bouhired and Khalida Messaoudi discuss the status of women after thirty years of single party rule, the rise of Islam and the increasing political violence that led to the assassination of President Boudiaf.

In conversation with Parminder Vir, this event will explore the role of women during wars of independence, and consider how films, art and literature remember them.
