Marc Molk, Chéri Samba and Kimiko Yoshida: The instance of the letter
8 November 2016
Closes: 3 December 2016
« The instance of the letter » is an expression borrowed from Jacques Lacan. Psychoanalysis is an art of the spoken word, but it grants fundamental importance to writing. Writing is a specific area of language. All that is written resists by nature, it insists and persists. All that is written may, should be taken « literally. »
The presence of writing in an image is always surprising. It’s as if we are witnessing a contest between two systems of representation that normally hate and repel each other, but that sometimes are strangely paired.
This exhibition brings together works by Marc Molk, Chéri Samba, and Kimiko Yoshida, all of whom play with this fire, the fire of text at the very heart of an image. Through three kinds of media: photography, drawing, and painting, three avenues where text insinuates itself into images are followed, with each departure requiring the taking of a risk, that of an unlikely marriage.
