Liberation (Un)Masked

Liberation (Un)Masked
25 November 2014
Closes: 13 December 2014
Sulger-Buel Lovell presents Liberation (Un)Masked featuring sculptures by Neill Wright (South Africa) and mixed media artworks by Turay Mederic (Ivorian based in Morocco). The exhibition explores the notion of liberation; the attainment of a state of freedom from constructed constraints. The African continent is a milieu of epochs of cyclic occurrences of conflict and unrest, and responsive efforts of rehabilitation and reconciliation. However the state of emancipation of countries within the continent does not connote the emancipation of the individual within their lived experience. The socio-economic and political challenge of existence remain embedded. Beneath the mask of liberation festers ubiquitous social inequalities; wounds bandaged in the wooing words of liberation.
