Closes: 30 May 2026
Kunsthalle Lissabon presents La Chantin, the first solo exhibition in Portugal by Panamanian artist Cisco Merel. Conceived specifically for the the space, the project explores the house not as a finished object, but as an open collective system in a constant state of becoming.
Through an installation of ventilated, and permeable structures with mobile elements, the exhibition addresses themes of migration, memory, identity, and resilience. Drawing from Afro-Antillean architectural traditions and the artist’s Chinese-Afro-Panamanian heritage, the works reflect on how the idea of home is constructed and transformed in contexts of displacement.
La Chantin invites visitors to activate the installation through movement, translating migratory experience into physical space and proposing the home as a transformable, affective, and political territory.
