Kazi Ya Mkono: Workshop & Artists Talk

Kazi Ya Mkono: Workshop & Artists Talk
16 April 2022
Closes: 1 May 2022
Contemporary And invites you to an afternoon featuring an art workshop and conversation with Kazi Ya Mkono project artists.
Venue: Kenyatta Market Time: 12PM- 4PM Entry: FREE
Kazi ya Mkono is a multidisciplinary art project by Wanjeri Gakuru, Naddya Adhiambo Oluoch-Olunya and Bethuel Muthee. It concerns itself with an invisible workforce. The ones whom playwright August Wilson described as pursuing “a way to live life with dignity and whatever eloquence the heart can call upon”…people of “definite and sincere worth”. Their work is demanding and requires grit. It pushes back against the soul-sapping efficiencies of the modern age.
The artists spent time with three MUSES: a hairdresser, watchmaker and welder and transformed their time together into a digital zine featuring first person narrations, illustrations and an essay contextualizing Kenya’s history of labour strikes. The goal of the project is to produce a vast body of work across various mediums with the MUSES at the centre. Presenting them as complicated protagonists with as many dreams, triumphs and ambitions as the disappointments and tragedies they’ve faced.
Join the artists at the Labour Day event for a 2hr art workshop that emphasizes play, imagination and collaboration. This shall be followed by an artists’ talk regarding the making of the project moderated by Rose Jepkorir.
