INVERSION-CONVERSION

INVERSION-CONVERSION features a group of six international artists based in Berlin, five of which are current participants of BPA, a program for artists that is centered around mutual studio-visits between participants and mentors.

The exhibition works with inversions that might propose new ways of conversions. "Transformation, whether material or metaphysical, has the potential to throw normativity into disarray and open up the field for different constellations of being. Crossing a threshold can be part of transformation, as well as creating an inversion or a conversion. This can occur by way of a reflection of a mirror, a role switch, a transfer, a “negative image”, that which could be seen as ontologically “downside up” or inside out. What happens to our perception when we see the world and our worlds in reversal?", asks the curator.

The answers are plural and rooted on the singular context of each artists and their backgrounds. Collectively, they work across the mediums of video, sculpture, installation, drawing, photography and painting. The exhibition brings together sensibilities that engage materiality with concepts informed by diverse feminisms, blackness and queerness in order to experience the present; a moment in a state of continual transformation (Saidiya Hartman).
