George Osodi: Royalty

Royalty is a solo exhibition featuring works from George Osodi’s well travelled series Nigerian Monarchs. Taken over the course of many months, the images feature the regional rulers of modern-day monarchies throughout the country.

The idea behind this project is to travel around this diverse country and go beyond the portraits to explore the subjects’ environments—being the custodians of our cultural heritage and peace makers—exploring their architecture and fashion with the view to showcase and celebrate them and to mirror the country’s great culture through their personalities.”

About the Artist
Born in 1974, George Osodi, joined the Associated Press News Agency Lagos, after they published some of his photographs depicting an explosion of munitions in Lagos that killed 600 people. He worked there until 2008, and during his tenure, was awarded first prize in the competition Fujifilm African Photojournalist of the Year (2004).

Osodi works in color and combines critical reportage with artistic documentary photography. His subjects are mostly social, economic and ecological exploitation of man and nature in the Niger Delta.

George Osodi took part in DOCUMENTA 12 2007 and has exhibited his works worldwide. His works are part of major international collections including the National Museum of African Art, Smithsonian Institution, the National Museum of Greece, the Martin Margulies Collection in Miami and the Museumslandschaft Hessen Kassel in Germany.

Osodi lives and works in Lagos.
