Frieze Talks 2015 at Frieze New York
Frieze Talks is a daily program of lectures, performances, conversations and panel discussions that takes place at Frieze New York. Participants in Frieze Talks 2015 include artist Pierre Bismuth, curator Thelma Golden and critic Jerry Saltz, among many others. Bringing together artists, curators, critics and cultural figures, Frieze Talks is part of the non-profit program at Frieze New York and is curated in 2015 by Tom Eccles (Executive Director of the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College) and Christy Lange (Associate Editor, frieze). When Jerry Saltz was "kicked off" Facebook this year, it stoked debate about the scope for satire in the art world. This year, Frieze invites participants to address the ways in which artists and critics push the limits of humor, irony, decency and performance, as well as the audience’s willingness to tolerate those provocations. On Thursday, May 14, Christian Jankowski (artist and Chief Curator of Manifesta 11) will weave the legendary music of Caetano Veloso into an artist talk; and Alexander Provan (Editor, Triple Canopy) will host a panel discussion on new models for artists’ collectives, with Abdullah Al-Mutairi (GCC) and Jamal Cyrus (Otabenga Jones & Associates). On Friday, May 15, comedian and artist Casey Jane Ellison will bring her irreverent humor to a performative, talk-show-style panel on the "Aesthetics" of "Female" "Attractiveness"; and Thelma Golden (Director and Chief Curator of The Studio Museum in Harlem, New York) and Dr. Arnold Lehman (Director, Brooklyn Museum, New York) will discuss the question: Whom do museums serve? On Saturday, May 16, French artist and filmmaker Pierre Bismuth will talk about his new film, Where Is Rocky II?; and Jerry Saltz (Critic, New York Magazine), who has brought his outspoken criticism and singular voice to over 150,000 followers on Twitter and Instagram, will answer your questions, in a conversation with the audience entitled "Ask Jerry." Finally, on Sunday, May 17, Los Angeles-based artists Leigh Ledare and Paul McCarthy will talk about their taboo-breaking work; and Hamza Walker, who is co-curating Made in LA in 2016, will chair a panel discussion about what artworks we find funny and why. Admission Frieze Talks takes place in the onsite auditorium at Frieze New York. Access is included in all admission tickets. Places for the talks can be reserved on the day of each talk at the information desk outside the auditorium.
