Echoes & Reverberations

Echoes & Reverberations explores sound as a medium of culture and history through the work of six contemporary artists, largely based in the Arab region. Using a variety of media, the artists explore the performative nature of different sounds – such as field recordings, hymns and oral story-telling – as well as their ability to both conjure and challenge cultural memory. From Jumana Emil Abboud's weaving of Palestinian folktales into everyday life to Joe Namy's interest in forms of collective sound and music, the artists in the exhibition employ different strategies to conjure and challenge cultural memory, through objects, performances and videos. Artists in the exhibition include: Jumana Emil Abboud, Anas Al-Shaikh, Basma Alsharif, Samah Hijawi, Magdi Mostafa and Joe Namy. The exhibition is accompanied by a programme of newly commissioned performances taking place on Saturday 18 July. The full performance schedule will be released closer to the time. The exhibition is a collaboration between Hayward Gallery, Delfina Foundation, the Maraya Art Centre, Sharjah and Shubbak: A Window on Contemporary Arab Culture. 11–26 July 2015. Ibraaz has produced an online catalogue for the exhibition, also available to download, which includes an introduction by curators Aaron Cezar and Cliff Lauson, essays by Dr. Alexandra MacGilp and Rayya Badran, individual projects pages for each participating artist, and a foreword by Ibraaz Editor-in-Chief Anthony Downey. www.southbankcentre.co.uk
