Conference: Between hesitation and rage - Civil protest and social movements in Africa

A quarter of a century after its near-complete globalization (neo)-liberal democracy and economy fall into a deep crisis. The resistance against the demands of globalized capitalism grows everywhere in the world. The so-called "Arab Spring" is one of the latest examples of the burgeoning mass protest. Even if it has not spread this eruptive force over the entire continent, yet a revival of social struggles in many places is obvious.
Social movements in Africa (as well as in other parts of the world) often occur unexpectedly violent, but pass frequently away again without laying the foundation for a long-term oppositional counter-movement. This phenomenon can be explained from the causes of protest, often directed at an individual, particularly oppressive imposition - without questioning the whole system. In addition, however, there are also some social protest movements that want to achieve the long-term transformation of social relations.
The conference will discuss how social protest could be organized in countries of Africa and Europe how and actors can be mobilized. What potential for changes have social and civil society movements, but also political parties? Can they convert the logic of social development to sustainable principles?
14th March 2015 10am - 4pm
