Body Talk : Feminism, Sexuality and the Body in the Work of Six African Women Artists

49 Nord 6 Est presents a new set of events bringing together different disciplines and points of view on women's rights. The status, identity, and visibility of bodies are at the heart of Body Talk, an exhibition curated by Koyo Kouoh, who is a key figure in the new artistic and critical landscape in Africa. Six renowned artists from the African continent offer their own visions of feminism, such as the reappropriation of the body by subverting the idea of woman as sex object; embodiment of historical figures; performative transformation that bridges traditions and modernity... Debates, seminars, performances, and a writer's residency by Peggy Pierrot set out to examine and account for the invisibility of being black in France, and more generally in Europe. This is a manifold and active combat aiming to give black bodies a place, a rightful place. And it's about time!
