Frestas – Art Triennial

Curated by Luciara Ribeiro, Naine Terena and Khadyg Fares, the 4th edition of the Triennial brings together 188 artworks by 102 artists at Sesc Sorocaba. Their works emerge from Black, Indigenous, marginalized and dissident experiences, challenging structures of power and historical imaginaries.

The 4th edition of the Frestas, Trienal de Artes approaches the act of walking as a political and spiritual gesture of affirmation, production and circulation of knowledge. The exhibition draws inspiration from the notions of “caminho como rezo” (I walk as I pray) proposed by professor and artist Tadeu Kaingang; of “Thaki,” present in Andean cosmology and described by the Bolivian sociologist Silvia Rivera Cusicanqui; and the idea of “Afropindoramic confluences,” developed by the maroon thinker Antônio Bispo dos Santos, also known as Nêgo Bispo.

This notion of walking carries not only social and cultural implications for bodies, territories, and communities, but is also aprroached in an expanded sense. Proposing a new perspective on the Sorocaba River, the curatorial team has included it among the exhibition’s artists as a living body of memory, territory, and dispute. This dimension is present in the collective work Memórias do Rio: ecos de resistência (2026), which brings together Discórdia, Étore Piqueira, FLAMAS – Fórum da Luta Antimanicomial de Sorocaba, and Margarida Libre, connecting historical forms of violence in the city to the current threat of destruction facing the river’a right bank.

Frestas – Trienal de Artes 2026 is on view through August 16th, 2026, at Sesc Sorocaba and at other sites across the city, including Capela João de Camargo, Clube 28 de setembro, Monumento Pelourinho and Monumento à Mãe Preta.
